Visa Summary

The Skilled Regional (Provisional) Subclass 489 visa is a 4-year provisional visa which requires holders to live and work in a regional area to obtain permanent residence. To qualify, you would need be sponsored by either a relative living in a designated area or a State or Territory Government.

The applicable occupations list if sponsored by a relative is the same as the list for the Skilled Independent visa. The state sponsored 489 occupations list is different from 190 Visa.

If you are sponsored by a relative, you will need to live for 2 years and work full time for 12 months in a regional or low population growth area to qualify for permanent residence through the Skilled Regional Subclass 887 visa.

The applicants can either be in Australia or overseas to lodge this visa.

There are three Streams of this visa

Invited Pathway:

In this stream skilled workers and sponsored relatives needs to pass the pool marks on the points table. You have to have a skilled occupation on the relevant skills list and applicant needs to get a suitable skills assessment for skilled worker or you have to live in the designated areas if your eligible relative is willing to sponsor you. You need to submit an expression of interest (EOI) and must receive an invitation to be eligible to apply for the visa.

Nomination Process:

Each State and Territory Government has its own list of occupations in demand in their area. There may be specific requirements in relation to your work experience, English language ability or specialised skills.

However for the family sponsored pathway you have to live in the low populated or low growth areas of the Australia as specified for a minimum of two years in order to be eligible to apply for a permanent visa.

All applicants have to submit an expression of interest (EOI) via SkillSelect. SkillSelect will estimate a points score; if you score high enough, Australian state and territory government agencies will be able to view your EOI and decide if they want to nominate you.

If you are nominated by a state or territory agency, you will be invited to apply for the visa. If you are invited, you have 60 calendar days to apply for the visa.

Extended Stay Pathway:

This is a temporary visa. It is for skilled workers who want to live and work in Australia. You can stay in Australia for up to 4 years from the date we granted your subclass 475, 487, 495 or 496 visa. Applicants can live, work and study in specified regional areas of Australia and travel to and from Australia as many times as you want, while the visa is valid.  At the time you apply for this visa you must hold 1 of the following provisional visas and have complied with all conditions of that visa for at least 2 years:

  • Skilled Regional Sponsored visa (subclass 475)
  • Skilled Regional Sponsored visa (subclass 487)
  • Skilled Independent Regional visa (subclass 495)
  • Skilled Designated Area Sponsored Provisional visa (subclass 496)

You must have never held more than 1 of these visas.

Subsequent Entry Pathway:

This visa is for a member of the family unit of someone who holds a Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489) or a subclass 475, 487, 495 or 496 visa. With this visa you can stay in Australia while the visa is valid. You can live, work and study in a specified regional area of Australia and travel to and from Australia as many times as you want during your visa. If the primary visa holder of your family unit was nominated, You will need to live, work and study in only certain areas of Australia. If the primary visa holder of your family unit was sponsored, You will need to live, work and study only in a designated area. If you are in Australia when you lodge your application you must hold a substantive visa or a bridging A, B or C visa.

In order to determine your eligibility about the visa pathway, you may need to satisfy certain requirements which may include but not limited to

  • You must have the skills to undertake the activity to be carried out in Australia
  • You must a positive skills assessment
  • Age requirements must be met
  • You must meet our health requirements
  • Meet English proficiency requirements
  • You must meet character requirements
  • Must have a health insurance
  • Must not have your previous visa cancelled or refused
