Visa Summary

This temporary visa lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker to fill a position they can’t find a suitably skilled Australian to fill.The Temporary Skill Shortage(TSS) Visa  Subclass 482 is the replacement of the Temporary Work (Skilled) Visa Subclass 457. The Australian government announced in April 2017 that this visa program will officially replace the 457 in March 2018. Skilled people with a relevant occupation are able to work in Australia for an employer who can’t find an Australian skilled worker appropriate for the desired work.

TSS visa operates in three streams, namely the Short-Term Stream, Medium-Term Stream and Labour Agreement Stream. The differences and similarities of the streams can be summarised in the following:

Short-term Stream

Key Info:

  • You can stay for up to 2 years or up to 4 if an International Trade Obligation (ITO) applies.
  • This stream is made for Australian businesses/employers to fill temporary or short-term skill gaps.
  • It has no pathway to Australian permanent residency- however it may assist in getting the experience for a direct entry visa or points for a points tested visa.
  • You must give the evidence that you have the skills, qualifications and at least 2 years experience in the occupation.
  • Your occupation has to be on the Short-term Skill Occupation List (STSOL). This list is revised every six months and occupations may be added or removed from the list as a result.

Medium-term Stream

Key Info:

  • In order to qualify for this visa, the applicants must have occupation listed in the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or Regional Occupational List (ROL).
  • Medium-term Temporary Skilled Shortage visa is relatively similar to the Subclass 457 visa.
  • You might have to get a skills assessment
  • You must have at least 2 years relevant work experience
  • Australian permanent residency is possible for applicants after three years.
  • The duration for medium-term TSS visa is four years.

Labour Agreement Stream

Key Info:

  • This Visa let you stay for up to a maximum of 4 years, depending on the terms in the labour agreement.
  • This visa is for skilled workers nominated by an employers with a Labour Agreement.
  • You must currently work, or will work, for your employer who holds a labour agreement.
  • You can not extend this visa. If you want to extend your stay, your employer will need to submit a new nomination and you must apply for a new visa.
  • You might have to get a skills assessment

In order to determine your eligibility about this relevant visa stream you may need to satisfy certain requirements which may include but not limited to

  • Your occupation must be on the relevant list of skilled occupations
  • You must have the necessary skills for the job
  • You must be nominated by an Australian employer
  • You must meet our health requirements
  • You must meet character requirements
  • You may be requested to get a skills assessment
  • Be working under the labour agreement
  • Must have health insurance
  • Must have the required level of English language proficiency
